Rehearsal Notes - 8/5/2020

Dear Friends,

We're nearing the end of our single/dual part "blind" rehearsals. And with that, let me just say thank you for participating in this strange and new way of thinking about singing. I know it has been challenging, frustrating, and maybe even a bit depressing at times, not being able to sing together. We're singers--we need to sing. And what we do brings us joy and life when we do; and yet, at this time in history it also presents the most significant risk to ourselves and to others in the process. For some of you, it might even be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But I know it's there. And I know that what we're doing now will pay off in the end. Please know I'm with you and support you in your frustration and even discouragement. Together, as an ensemble, we will create beautiful music once again.

That being said, here are the notes from last week:
Alleluia:
  • This song is about a constant shift in dynamics - 69 out 75 total measures have a written or suggested dynamic shift.  Highlight EVERY ONE. That means if there is a crescendo occurring through a couple of measures pencil in what that measure should be. And practice singing it observing them all.
  • Lean into Al-le-LU-ia
  • Altos, tenors, and basses don't breathe between mm. 12-13 and 44-46
  • Don't run out of air at the ends of phrases--stagger so the energy and pitch stay vibrant
  • Practice ppp singing with intensity and practice your initial ppp onset ah
Little Birds:
  • Decide what sounds (bird calls or free form pitch patters) you will sing in mm. 5-11 and 46-49. Make them delicate and beautiful. Remember "little" birds
  • Write in the words of the poem:
Light unblinking,  (La luz no parpadea,)
Time empty of minutes,  (el tiempo se vacía de minutos)
A bird stopped short in the air.  (se ha detinido un pájaro en el aire.)
Light cast down,  (Se despeña la luz)
The pillars awake and,  (des piertan las columnas y,)
Without moving,  (sin moverse,)
Dance. (bailan.)
The hour/time is transparent:  (La hora es transparente:)
If the bird is invisible,  (si es invisible el pájaro,)
Let us see the color of his song.  (el color de su canto.)
  • Soprano I: please correct the misprint on p. 11, m. 33. The A is natural, not sharped.
  • Sing this with a sense of awe and dreaminess
For Wednesday:

Music Down in My Soul
A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square
Modimo

See you Wednesday evening:
6:30 - 7:30  Women
7:30 - 8:30  Men

Prep Rehearsal - 7/29/2020

Dear Friends,
Thank you for your continued positive energy and interest as we weather these challenging times. I appreciate the time and effort put forth to get this music learned and ready to rehearse and eventually record. From last week's rehearsal:

Abendlied -
  • Please mark and observe all dynamics noting stressed and unstressed syllables
  • Make all f and ff full and broad as opposed to merely loud and louder. Always sing with beautiful rich tone on beautiful rich vowels
  • Be aware of the very quick diminuendo the last half of m. 38 going into m. 39
  • Maintain tone and pitch in descending lines and cadences
I'm Gonna Sing 'Til the Spirit Moves in My Heart -
  • Please mark, and then observe the accents throughout while singing
  • Altos practice the intervals in mm. 40-41
  • Note the dynamics where I have adjusted them: 1st chorus/mm. 10-19 are first time = mf, and repeat = p; last chorus/mm. 44-52 are first time = mf  and repeat = ff
  • Memorize...it's pretty easy. First chorus repeated is SING, Second chorus no repeat PRAY, Third chorus repeated is SHOUT  The reason I want this memorized is it will record better with eyes out of score AND I want it in our permanent performing repertoire.
For next Wednesday, 2/29:

Alleluia -
  • Again, mark every dynamic mark - noting much of it is soft
  • Work on starting the initial "ah" of the first Alleluia with a very soft, non-glottal, non-aspirated sound. Pure, delicate tone.
  • Always energize the "loo" of each Alleluia
  • What the chromaticisms (marked by lots of accidentals) and especially watch the harmonic shift (seeming key change) at mm. 26
Little Birds -
  • Practice your Spanish with clean articulated consonants
  • Work for a nice full, warm sound starting with the crescendo in mm. 36-40
  • Dust off your bird sounds
Thanks and see you Wednesday,
 Ted

Prep Rehearsal 7/22/2020

Singing friends,

Thanks again for your attention and work in last weeks rehearsal.

As a recap on Os Justi:
  • Dynamics are many and varied. Please highlight all.
  • Sing with rich, round vowels and lean into strong syllables.
  • Maintain tone and pitch acuity in sustained, staggered phrases all the way to the end.
  • Sing middle pages with the tone quality, fluidity, and ease of Renaissance style
  • Altos lean into suspension on in corde
  • Alleluia at end will be light and free
On Grace Before Sleep:
  • Watch every final "t" for clean release
  • Even when not singing the melody, ATB sing chordal phrases as if its the melody
  • Pg. 5, mms. 17-20 - elongate the vowel (no consonant until next syllable) and control crescendo and softening on last chord
  • Starting at m. 21 sing legato but clearly articulated words
  • Sing pp. 9 rich and hymn-like.
  • In mm. 40, 42, and 44, watch final consonant and breath so sopranos are by themselves when entering.
For Wednesday:

Abendlied:
  • Soprano I: Melody, Karen, Eileen, Suzanne, Lisa
  • Soprano II/Alto I: Carissa, Annie, Hunter, Wendy, Joanna
  • Alto II: Suzi, Cyndi, Gina, Michele, Cassi
  • Tenor I: Joe, Dan, Chuck
  • Tenor II: Dana, Thom, Ovid, Andrew
  • Bass: Matthew, Peter, John, Ben, Robert
Any women who sang a different part and don't want to learn a new one, see if you can get someone to switch with you.

  • All f and ff should be warm rich and not "loud." Think fuller orchestration or fuller organ.
  • The song is about an invitation to stay for the evening as the shadows are lengthening (basking in the richness of the setting sun at the end of the day)
  • Highlight all dynamic shifts

I'm Gonna Sing 'Til the Spirit Moves in My Heart:
  • I would like Dan, Chuck, Joe, and Thom (in that order) to sing the first page as solo riffs. Joe, make a little more of the third one.
  • Small group starting the pick-up to m. 10 is Chuck, Dan, and Joe. Tenor line at m. 10 is Dana, Thom, Ovid, and Andrew
  • Highlight all accents and dynamics. Note some changes I made.
  • Note asterisk and meaning in mm. 13, 31, 47 - Je-su-sa
  • SAT sing mm. 20-27 as if you're listening and responding to basses.
  • Sing mm. 35-43 smoothly and cleanly observing dynamics
  • Suzanne and Melody do the soprano obligato starting mm. 44 with Melody on top
  • Add rit. in measure 53 before fermata.
  • There will be a slight crescendo bump on the final fermata.
See you on Wednesday.

Prep Rehearsal - 7/15/2020

Dear Friends,
Thanks for another good rehearsal. Another shout out to Ovid for his help with organizing the meeting room, and Chuck for setting up the microphone. Hopefully you all found it easier to hear.

A few notes about last weeks rehearsal, in The Sweetheart of the Sun

  • Highlight every dynamic and tempo indication. There are many and they make all the difference in the expression of the song. It's a poetic expression of an epic love story.
  • Sing primarily with non-vibrato tone throughout for tuning due to the tight harmonics
  • Altos/Tenors on p. 4, mm. 15, sing Ah instead of an as discussed
  • Everyone be careful of intonation, tone, and dynamic control on p. 6 mm. 31-36
In Sing Me to Heaven
  • Sing with rich vowels and short, intense consonants.
  • Note the breaths as indicated in my score.
  • Use almost non-vibrato tone in the chords in mm. 34 and 56-58
For rehearsal on Wednesday, July 15:

We will flip the rehearsal order:
6:30 - 7:30 MEN
7:30 - 8:30 WOMEN

Os Justi
  • Karen, would you mind determining the soprano divisi on this.
  • Basses, divide yourselves as you are on Sweetheart on the Sun
  • I will send copies of my score in an attachment in an email. Highlight every dynamic.
Grace Before Sleep
  • Same divisi for Sopranos and Basses
  • Note my score for some changes in dynamics
Keep rehearsing the previous songs...

Have a great weekend,
Ted

Prep Rehearsal for 7/8/2020

Friends,
It was great to be making music last week. However impersonal it may have felt, we were nonetheless connected. I will plan to have a better mic so that the piano may be heard better. Also, a HUGE thank you to Ovid for moderating the rehearsal. I'm hoping that as we become more familiar with the Microsoft Teams platform, it will become less work for him. Thank you to all of you for being flexible in these challenging times.

A couple of notes about last week:
  • I cannot stress enough about using the richest vowels possible on the Beati quorum via. That being said, use a #4 tone (#5 being the darkest.) I may opt for #3, but altos always use a #4.
  • Lean into be-AH-ti quoh-room VEE-ah EEn-teh-grah, ehst, qui-AHm-boo-lahnt, een-LEH-jeh, DAW-mi-ni
  • Diminish final syllables
  • Energize sustained pitches, particularly when descending to avoid flatting
  • Keep quarter notes moving--distinct, but legato
  • Work on memorization of There is a Pleasure. If we ever do a virtual performance, I want it to be on this piece and I want it memorized (and facially expressive.)
  • Again, rich vowels, but really enunciate consonants--almost overdo them for intelligibility
  • Keep these two songs fresh, as if we were performing them tomorrow.
For this Wednesday:
We will work on Sweetheart of the Sun and Sing Me to Heaven with women together and men together. Again, women are encouraged to practice with men and vice versa.
  • Women 6:30 - 7:30 pm
  • Men 7:30 - 8:30 pm
I will be sending copies of my score via separate email. Please look over for highlighting of dynamics and tempi, as well as where breaths are taken. MARK YOUR SCORE ACCORDINGLY.

I look forward to "seeing" you on Wednesday.

Prep for Rehearsal 7/1/2020

Hi Friends,
I'm really looking forward to seeing you for our rehearsal. A couple of things to be aware of:
  • Please vocally warm-up before hand. Below are links to YouTube warm-up in each voice range. Each one is between 15-20 minutes.
Soprano: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54w9PlMECkI
Mezzo-Soprano: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fcfirmtcx84
Alto: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8W17MXgvOQ
Tenor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZTGeqaU9bc&t=635s
Baritone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJJJ1HxD49c&t=293s

  • Sopranos: 6:30, Altos: 7:00, Tenors: 7;30, Bass: 8:00
  • We will be rehearsing Beati Quorum Via and There is a Pleasure. Soprano I and II will be together, and Bass I and II will be together. Please see the last blog posting for the divisi. Some altos and tenors will need to be at both section rehearsals because of the overlap. I encourage you to be at the whole rehearsal for harmonizing with the other parts.
  • After gaining entrance into the rehearsal, you will be instructed to mute and I will direct from the piano. You will rehearse your part muted, singing along with the piano or with me. If I come to the end of a phrase or section and you have a question, raise a hand and un-mute and I will address it.
  • The following are directions from Ovid on the use of the new platform which is called Micrsoft Teams. Ovid will be moderating the site. One of the reasons for using this site is that we will in time be able to hear each other.
We will be exploring Microsoft Teams for our Virtual Rehearsal spaces as it offers the following capabilities for us:
  • Online storage for sheet music and rehearsal parts
  • Separate Virtual Rehearsal spaces by section contained in one Team
  • Presenting PDF's, Videos, and other content during Live Virtual Rehearsals
  • Archiving Live Rehearsal Meetings for later reference
SETTING UP MICROSOFT TEAMS

Each singer will receive an invitation to the Microsoft Teams group for Bel Canto - I suggest that everyone uses their iPhone to use the Microsoft Teams platform.

The iOS app can be downloaded here (hint: open the link on your iPhone):

or you may point your phone's camera to this QR Code:

Otherwise, desktop users can use the web app version, which may require you to run a browser plug-in (hint: don't install the desktop application version) :

The dedicated link to the Main Teams Channel is:

or you may point your phone's camera to this image:

For tomorrow's rehearsal, there will be four different meetings rooms separated by sections. Virtual Rehearsals will be done using these dedicated URL's:

Rehearsal for CD (Please note change of date)

Dear Friends,
For those of you who weren't able to attend our Zoom meeting, we had a good time catching up. We also discussed our plan to rehearse for the production of our CD. Originally, I had said we would begin this Wednesday, June 24, but I need to postpone one week. So we will begin, on Wednesday July 1st. Here is the breakdown of the plan:

We will rehearse each section of a piece for 30 minutes as follows (this may rotate over time):
  • 6:30 to 7:00 - Soprano part(s)
  • 7:00 to 7:30 - Alto part
  • 7:30 to 8:00 - Tenor part
  • 8:00 to 8:30 - Bass part
  • If there is a three-part divisi (SSA or TBB) I will let you know when I will be rehearsing two parts together
5 minutes before your appointed time, sign in using the link that will be provided that week. After a few instructions, each person will mute themselves. I will give instructions and rehearse each part on the piano with individual lines and then eventually with harmony. Each singer will sing along with the piano only hearing him or herself and me. Please have a pencil handy so you can mark breaths, dynamics, tempo changes, and suggestions for mood and tone. I will stop periodically to address questions and repeat sections.

I want to encourage singers to use the entire 2 hours as often as possible and practice their part along with the other parts. For example, after the soprano sectional, sopranos can sing their part opposite the alto line, then with the tenors, then the basses. This will be your opportunity to harmonize and strengthen your independence.

I am going to try to get a good microphone on my end so that you can hear me more clearly. I would suggest your using good speakers or ear buds, but NOT noise cancelling headphones. You want to be able to hear yourself naturally along with the other parts (not what you hear in your head.)

For July 1st, I want to rehearse Beati Quorum Via by Charles Stanford. Divisi will be as follows:
  • Soprano I: Suzanne Quinlan, Annie Budash, Melody Neal, Karen May, Carissa Wendt
  • Soprano II: Lisa van Stuijvenberg, Eileen Hunt, Hunter Hollingsworth, Joanna Mittman, Wendy Valle
  • Alto: Cassi Tynan, Gina De Luca, Michele Conyers, Suzi Gilbert, Cyndi Kasten
  • Tenor: Joe Pesch, Chuck Dresel, Dan Bunnell, Berkeley Rousseau
  • Bass I: Thom Hinesley, Dana Zaccone, Ovid Ocampo, Andrew Moore
  • Bass II: John Kasten, Matthew Gracy, Peter Mellencamp, Ben Schmidt, Robert Mittman
I would also like to rehearse There is a Pleasure. This means that some of the cross-over parts will need to plan to rehearse with both sections.

All of the music is on the Resources Site (Melody, I haven't forgotten you.)

Tentatively, the plan is to rehearse this way and learn the music as well as we can with distance learning, and hopefully by early Spring, we can begin getting together to rehearse as a group, to record in March and to release the CD at our May concert. Fingers crossed.

Also, I'm toying with the idea of doing a virtual recording of one (maybe two) of the songs. It would need to be memorized. In addition to having something out there on social media and/or YouTube, I would really like to use it as a tool for everyone to really work on their facial expressiveness while singing.

Please let me know if you have any questions via email. I look forward to seeing your faces on July 1st.

Let's Get Crackin'

Ok Gang,
I have now updated the Resources site. There you will find recordings of all the pieces that Ted has selected for our Recording Project #2. Here is the link to that page.
In addition, all the part recordings with the exception of 'Sing Me to Heaven' and 'Beati Quorum Via' are posted as well. Ted assures me that he will get the two missing ones to me soon. Here is the link to that page.
Finally, we have pdf files of all the pieces except the 2 you already have from our canceled season. You should be able to print the pieces that you need. Here is the link to that page.
I'm thinking that once everyone has their music Ted can start giving us weekly notes on what to be working on and maybe we can even have some virtual rehearsals.

Sheltering in Place 4/25/2020

Hello dear friends,
It seems like forever since we parted ways to shelter from the effects of the pandemic. I hope you are doing ok. This is a new experience for all of us, and I'm sure there are myriad thoughts and emotions that have arisen as we've cooperated in an effort to protect ourselves, those we love, and those working to manage and care for those affected. Personally, it's been kind of a roller coaster. But here I am to say, let's move forward as best we can.
After reviewing the votes on the pieces I provided, I put together the following list. With one exception, these are the highest voted on pieces. I was trying to come up with something that maintained an easy listening mood (not all over the place dynamically and tempo wise) as well as represented a good variety. In the end, I realized that much of it was slower and calmer, so I decided to pull White Birds and substitute Modimo. My reasoning was that White Birds is quite long and similar to the others. Also, Modimo provides an enthusiastic mood and color to the repertoire.
That being said, let's get started. I have compiled, organized and filed all the originals from our past concerts, and could probably put together a packet or two for Joe (I also picked up your water bottle after our last rehearsal) and Michele since most of this will be new to them. As for the rest, perhaps Chuck can make copies for what they don't have available on line. I believe that we have both part recordings as well as performance recordings for all of these. Please let me know, Chuck, if that isn't the case, and I can make new ones. I have tentatively decided to call this project In This Generous Room, from the line in Grace Before Sleep. It makes me think of Mont La Salle Chapel which I will probably write briefly about for the CD notes.
I will begin sending out notes for rehearsal to mark your scores so that when do finally get together to rehearse, we can be prepared to really polish the music. I realize, of course, that a lot of this will be new to newer members, so I ask you to take this time to really dig in. It's some really incredible music to feed your soul.
I can't wait to see you all again and begin to make beautiful music together. Please stay safe and well and I'll be in touch again, soon.
Much love,
Ted

Week of 4/1/2020

Dear Singers,
  • Last rehearsal I decided that we will sing the entire Due North suite, which now includes Mountains and Varied Thrushes. I have recorded the parts for Mountains, but not Varied Thrushes as the parts for that are almost sight readable with little pitch variance.
  • I have also recorded the parts for Modimo with notes and rhythms up to m. 32. After that it's repetition of previous material. Please listen and look over parts and diction (as given in the introductory notes in your scores). We will drill the rhythm on Wanyamalala section mm. 24-32, so please have the notes and words fluent.
  • If you're interested in singing one of the solos for All Creatures of Our God and King, please send me an a cappella audition recording either to my phone: 707-815-1733 or to my email: tvonpohle@gmail.com. by Wednesday if possible.
For Wednesday:
  1. Modimo
  2. Brahm's Quartet #4 Warum - please review notes, rhythms and words.
  3. We will review all Brahm's Quartets
  4. Due North: Mountains and Varied Thrushes
  5. Now All the Woods Are Sleeping
  6. Men: The Lion Sleeps Tonight
Chuck has posted all the parts and recordings now. Thank you, Chuck!
Thank you to the Scholarship Committee for a very productive meeting today.

Week of 2/15/2020

Dear Singers,

Here are a few notes about last weeks rehearsal:
There Is a Pleasure - Please solidify all notes, rhythms and diction. Tenors review the pitch progression going into the last chord in mm. 8 and 21.  MEMORIZE
Spatherbst - Please make sure notes, rhythms and German diction are solid. Remember to pull through the tied notes before triplets (all parts).
Bumble Bee - Be confident on parts up to m. 76. Each solo section work for uniformity, blend, and clarity, especially in Sop. 1 and 2.
Trees - Be confident on all notes, rhythms and words. Pay particular attention to page 7.

For Wednesday, please look at:
Abenlied
Due North
2. Trees
3. Woodpecker

Bumble Bee - to the end

Modimo - This will be MEMORIZED

Wednesday, I want to get your feedback on something. At our holiday concert, we had a record attendance:
                    167 at First Presbyterian
+ 259 at Mont La Salle (SRO)
= 426 Total (120 more than last year)
Last spring's attendance was:
                     79 at NVC
+ 170 at Mont La Salle
= 249 Total (77 more than the previous year)

We talked of potentially doing a total of three concerts, one on Friday evening at First Presbyterian, one on Saturday evening Up-Valley at PUC, and one on Sunday afternoon at Mont La Salle. We were going to make the Friday one be in conjunction with the scholarship program, feature the student(s) involved in that, and draw from family and friends of the student(s). However, we're now looking at something different for the scholarship program that would go into effect Fall of 2020. So, the question is, since it seems that our attendance is growing, do we still want to try to have two concerts in Napa and one Up-Valley. Or because attendance at the spring concert is significantly less, we just have the one in Napa. Based on last spring's total attendance, we might oversell Mont La Salle again. Think about it and let's talk on Wednesday.

Peace,
Ted

Wednesday 1/29/2020 Rehearsal

Hi Singers,

Quick note as I get ready to drive south Tuesday morning to greet my new granddaughter when she arrives. There WILL BE REHEARSAL on Wednesday. Karen, Suzi, Ovid, and Andrew will hopefully be able to go through music and work with the respective sections.

These are the things I would love you to try to cover:
  • Trees - Review the parts, making sure to circle/highlight all breaths, dynamics and tempi changes
  • Spatherbst - Review the parts we worked on last week and try with German. Have Karen confirm and questions about pronunciation
  • Abenlied  and Warumb - Go through parts on doo - make sure of pronunciation
  • Bumble Bee - See if you can wade through this to the end
  • Sicut cervus - Go through this with the words
  • Any thing else if you have time.
Thanks so much and see you in a week.
Ted

I'll be sending an email with the repertoire list attached.

Happy 2020!!!

Dear Singers,
First of all, I want to commend you all on the fantastic job you did at both concerts in December. You sang masterfully. I have listened to the recording that Chuck made repeatedly and have smiled with pride of your accomplishment. The Lobet den Herrn was particularly brilliant! Definitely worth the time and effort, despite "too many notes." We also had the highest attendance at our performances ever with a total of 430 at combined venues and 258 (232 is capacity) at Mont La Salle. (At our board meeting on Friday we will be discuss the potential need of having an additional performance.) I have received rave reviews ever since.
I also want to thank those of you who participated in the Christmas Eve service at Mont La Salle. You made it an absolutely wonderful program this year and again, I have had people from the chapel lauding the beautiful music you provided. Thank you so much!
I want to remind you that our first rehearsal will be next Wednesday, January 15, 6:30-8:30 pm at Harvest Middle School. We will be welcoming Berkeley Rousseau back, but unfortunately will not have Annie Budash. Annie wrote me today saying that she is making some transitions in her life, namely planning a move away, which will preclude her from participating. She asked that I tell you, actually her words are, "please let them know how grateful I feel to have known them and hope to be at the concert!"
I, this evening, put in the order for our music for our spring concert, Song of the Woods. It will be music praising the glory of nature ranging from Palestrina's Sicut Cervus to an arrangement of The Lion Sleeps to Tonight to Brahm's Four Quartets Op. 92, to a song called Mosquitos. Speaking of which, if you have copies of Sicut Cervus from before, please bring it. I will have copies from public domain for those who don't.
Please make sure you have the following dates in your calendars:
  • Wednesday, January 15, 2020 6:30-8:30 - First Rehearsal - Harvest Middle School
  • Saturday, March 22, 2020 9:00 am - 3:30 pm - Bell Canto Boot Camp - TBD
  • Wednesday, April 29 and Thursday, April 30 - 6:30 - 8:30 - Dress Rehearsal - TBD
  • Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 1-3 - CONCERTS
I can't wait to see you all and to start making beautiful music together again.
Ted
